Use WAD or Up, Left, Right to run and jump, as you have to go towards the end of each map, with them being quite long, and you get returned to checkpoints if you die and have enough money for that, so make sure to collect the wads of cash you find along the way whenever you can.
You've got a limited number of lives, so don't lose them by bumping into dogs, policemen, getting shot, hit by balls, or other dangers and traps. The human and animal enemies can be defeated if you jump on top of their heads, so don't hesitate to attempt it.
